IN CHARACTER
Name: Leonard Snart, aka Captain Cold
Canon: The Flash/Legends of Tomorrow (DC TV Universe)
Canon Point: Just after joining the Legends
Age: 40-ish
History: Leonard Snart did not have the easiest start in life. His father, Lewis Snart, was a dirty, alcoholic cop who took out his anger on Leonard and his sister, Lisa, physically and emotionally abusing them both. As Leonard got older, and his father turned more to crime, Leonard was expected to take part in the “family business” as well, his father taking him along on jobs and forcing him to help. “I had little hands, I could get into tiny spaces, do whatever he needed me to do – like, rewiring a security system.” After his father was taken to prison, Leonard continued in the criminal path, finding his own niche in thievery and making his name as a mastermind whom the cops could never quite catch in the act. He always had his plans timed down to the second, knowing exactly how long it would take for the police to react and arrive on a crime scene, and had everything planned out so he’d never be caught.
Everything changed, however, when the Flash came onto the scene. The Flash first interrupted one of Leonard’s diamond heists, arriving far before any police could have been there. Angry at being foiled, Leonard determined that the Flash is a person, and if so, he could be stopped. He procured a gun that fired cold blasts, thinking correctly that cold would slow down someone who is moving at high speeds. (At the time, he did not know that the cold gun had been designed by someone at STAR Labs specifically to stop Barry Allen, the Flash, in the event that he turned out to be evil.) Using the cold gun, he lured out the Flash, and determined that his weakness was wanting to save everyone. Using that knowledge, he once again attempted to steal a large diamond, then escaped by derailing a train and distracting the Flash into saving everyone rather than catching him.
After that first encounter, Leonard became obsessed with defeating the Flash. Though he commended him for making him “step up his game,” he determined that he would not be able to continue stealing as he had before, with someone like the Flash around to stop him. Embracing the nickname “Captain Cold,” he embarked on a series of robberies with his partner in crime, Mick Rory, aka “Heatwave,” whom he had given a flame-thrower gun similar to his own cold gun. Attempting to draw out the Flash again, he became frustrated when the Flash did not appear to stop him, and resorted to kidnapping Dr. Snow in order to force the Flash to face him. In that encounter, the Flash once again defeated him, causing the cold and heat guns to cross streams and cancel each other out, effectively destroying themselves. “You win this round, kid,” Leonard said with a grin, lying on the ground after the fight is over. Captain Cold and Heatwave were taken into police custody… but were almost immediately broken out again by Leonard’s sister as they were being transported to prison.
Leonard’s next move was to get his cold gun rebuilt, by kidnapping Cisco Ramon and forcing him to do so. He also made him rebuild the heat gun, as well as make a “gold gun” for his sister. Lastly, he threatened Cisco’s brother if Cisco would not tell him the Flash’s name. Once he’d found that, he released Cisco and his brother and confronted the Flash, Barry Allen, again. At this point, he and Barry came to a reluctant sort of truce… the Flash could not let him simply steal anything he wanted, but Captain Cold would not kill anyone while he did so.
Some time later, Barry actually came to Leonard for help with a problem that he could not solve on his own. He needed help transporting a group of meta-humans, criminals, and the police could not help him. Leonard initially scoffed at the idea, but eventually agreed once he realized that the meta-humans would destroy Central City if they were to get free. The city was his home too, and there wouldn’t be anyone to rob if everyone was dead, right? However, his ulterior motive quickly became clear as he double-crossed the Flash and set the meta-humans free, with the thought that they would remember who released them and owe him a favor. Still, he stopped one of them from killing Barry, giving the flippant (and transparent) excuse “he owed me money,” and telling Barry “well, now I guess you owe me one too.”
Later on, Lisa Snart came to the Flash and company for help, saying that Leonard had been kidnapped. Surprised, but concerned, Barry found him and discovered that he was working with his father, Lewis, on a robbery job. Assuming that Lisa had lied to them, Barry returned and then learned the story of the Snart siblings abusive past with their father. Eventually, they discovered that Lewis had placed a micro-bomb in Lisa’s neck, and was forcing Leonard to work with him on the job. Barry decided to go undercover as a criminal and try to find out what was really going on, to buy the team time to get the bomb out of Lisa, but ended up along on the heist with Leonard and Lewis. Lewis used Barry’s skills, then shot him (though Barry used his Flash skills to catch the bullet and faked his death), but Leonard looked on in shock and whispered “sorry, Barry.” Minutes later, Barry returned as the Flash and challenged Lewis, who commanded Leonard to shoot the Flash with his cold gun, or he’d kill Lisa. Leonard hesitated, obviously torn, while Barry looked at him calmly. Seconds later, Barry heard that Lisa was safe, and passed that message along… and Leonard immediately turned and shot his father in the chest, killing him. Barry asked, “why did you do that?” and Leonard answered, “he broke my sister’s heart… only fair that I break his.”
After Leonard was taken to prison, Barry visited him, and for the first time, told him that he believes that there’s good in him. Leonard replied, “So I should be a hero like you, Barry? Tell me, what does that pay, again?” Barry just smiled and left him at that.
Near Christmas, Leonard broke out of prison with the help of one of the other meta-humans, Mark Mardon. Mardon expected Leonard to join up with him and James Jesse, the Trickster, in their plot to kill the Flash. However, Leonard was not so eager to do so, and instead went to warn Barry at his home. (He broke in and stole his hot chocolate and complained there were no mini-marshmallows as he waited for him there…) Barry asked Leonard to help him stop the others instead of just warning him, again trying to appeal to what he felt was Leonard’s better nature, but Leonard again replied, “I don’t feel like being a hero.” When Barry snapped “Well you’re doing a lousy job being a villain, today,” Leonard simply responded, “Merry Christmas, Barry,” and left.
Leonard seemed destined to become something of a hero, at least. Rip Hunter, a time traveler, returned to 2016 to try to gather a team to stop Vandal Savage, an immortal tyrant. Captain Cold was on his list. Reluctantly, Leonard had joined the team, ostensibly to have fun stealing things from the past. However, now that he is a part of the group, he is becoming more protective of them, more eager to actually help with the mission, and… perhaps save the world? Only time will tell.
Personality: Leonard has a flair for the dramatic, especially when he is in Captain Cold persona. He loves grand entrances, making people notice him, and everyone knowing who he is. For example, he calls out the Flash on a television broadcast, challenging him to an encounter where everyone can see. He also flagrantly takes down the head of a crime family, and lets one underling go, telling him to “let everyone know there’s a new boss in town, and his name is Cold.” He’s expressive with his hands when he talks, punctuating his words with gestures and flicks of his fingers.
Sometimes, his dramatic edge takes on a more humorous tone, as when he broke into Barry’s house to warn him of a plot against him… and he decided to just chill by the fireplace with a reindeer mug full of hot cocoa rather than do anything more sinister. He also loves cold puns. Not completely over-the-top, but he definitely uses them. “You lost your cool… we don’t need the heat.” He even plays the song Cold as Ice on a jukebox when Barry meets him in a bar.
Despite his flamboyant persona of Captain Cold, Leonard does play his emotions close. If he’s angry, he’s coldly angry, not yelling or rampaging, but plotting or quietly sneering. He’ll tell you softly to take your hand off him… then punch you in the face if you don’t. If he’s upset, he’s closed off, or hiding behind a snarky quip. If he’s happy, it’ll be a quiet smile or chuckle. His true emotions are shown in subtle movements, expressions when he thinks no one is looking. Otherwise, he’s going to be smirking, putting up that “Cold” persona.
Leonard has a sarcastic, snarky sense of humor, and won’t hesitate to use it just to irritate people or get on their bad side. He has no intention of playing nice with anyone, unless it serves his purpose, or he has some use for them. If he thinks he can use you? He’ll be your best buddy. If not? You’re going to wish you didn’t know him. He does like to talk, though, and can be very convincing if he’s trying to get you to see things his way. When convincing his partner in crime Mick Rory to join the Legends team to travel through time with him, he gives him a speech describing all the fantastic things they could steal in the past, simply for the thrill of it. Who cares about saving the world when they can pull off jobs like that?
On that note, Leonard doesn’t seem to be a thief simply for the monetary gain. He does it for the thrill of it, the satisfaction of accomplishing a job without getting caught. When he sets his sight on something he wants, he doesn’t give up until he has it, even if he’s thwarted briefly in the process. (As seen when the Flash stops him from stealing a large diamond from an armored car; Leonard later returns to steal the same diamond from a museum.) He can become fixated and obsessed, as he did with defeating the Flash, and he’ll be frustrated if things don’t go the way he planned.
He likes to take charge in most situations, and doesn’t like being told what to do. When he’s planning a heist, he’s the one calling the shots, pulling together all the details. Now that he’s on the Legends team, he often clashes with Rip Hunter and the others on who should be in charge of their missions, especially if he feels it’s something in his area of expertise. For example, when Rip reminds him that he’s the one in charge, Leonard replies, “Oh, I remember, I just don’t care.” He’ll do his missions his way, and to hell with what anyone else wants or thinks. (For now, anyway.)
There are very few people Leonard cares about, and his sister is at the top of that list. If you hurt Lisa, you’d better be prepared to deal with Captain Cold’s wrath. Leonard basically raised Lisa when they were children, protected her from their abusive father, and now she’s one of the few he trusts and will do anything for. Possibly because of his abuse, he doesn’t appear to like to be touched, and even actively flinches away from his father when he reaches toward him.
Leonard always insists that he’s nothing but a cold-hearted criminal, a liar, and a thief, and that there’s nothing good in him… however, his actions speak to the contrary. He has a moral code, and won’t break his word to Barry. He’s saved Barry’s life on more than one occasion. Now that he’s on the “Legends” squad, too, he’s started to think of them as his “team” as well. If anyone messes with his team, he’ll fight them. He doesn’t particularly want to be a “good guy”, but… he’s not necessarily the pure villain anymore.
He’ll still punch you in the nose if he doesn’t like you, though.
Abilities/Skills: Leonard is physically fit, and is shown to be a good fighter in hand-to-hand combat. He also is adept with his weapon, the cold gun.
Though he never finished high school, he’s highly intelligent, and can time events down to the second, knowing exactly how long he has to finish a task (or heist). He’s very good with wiring and electrical components, able to take his cold gun apart and put it back together with ease, or dismantle a security system.
He has many skills related to criminal activities, such as pickpocketing, lock-picking, fighting, escape, etc.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
-Highly intelligent
-Attention to detail
-Takes charge
-Good with electronics
-Stubborn
-Tendency toward obsession
-No super-human powers

[His smile turns a little dark.] I’d hate for anyone to get hurt trying to use it, as it’s a bit… tricky. Tends to explode if you don’t know the failsafe. Which only I do.
So, if someone would be so kind as to drop it off with me, we’ll all be cool. [Another “friendly” smile, and the video cuts off.]
